Self Catering - Activities 2011/12
We recommend you book your activities and excursions approx. 8 weeks prior to departure. Prices may change without warning due to factors outside the control of Simply Sweden. Please ask for children's prices. You must let us know of any dietary requirements at the time of booking. All dates are approximate and subject to condition. If a tour doesn't go ahead due to weather conditions you will receive a full refund. Some activities have a minimum number of 4 people. If you are less don't worry , if may still be possible to do the activity as it may be possible to join in with another group. To drive a snowmobile you must be 18yrs of age and be in possession of a driving licence that is valid in Sweden.
Guided Snowmobile Tour to Treehotel
A 5hr excursion through the snow covered forests of Swedish Lapland to one of Sweden's great architectural masterpieces. As you reach the high ground between Storklinten and Treehotel you have beautiful views across the Luleå River valley. Lunch is served at Britta's Pensionate (Guest house), which is part of Treehotel. Britta's Guest House is a listed building dating from the 1930's. This is a genuine Swedish building, with traditional furniture and ornaments. A warm welcome with a very Swedish feel, in a very Swedish country location! After lunch there is a guided walk into the forest and the rooms in the treetops. See the Mirror cube, birds nest and UFO hanging in the trees!

Hovercraft to the pack ice (ice wall)
We cannot recommend this excursion highly enough. Anders is your hovercraft pilot and Anna is your chef. Anders & Anna will meet you on the island of Hindersön in the Luleå archipelago. When staying at Storklinten you will use your rental car to reach the start point of this tour by driving on ice roads ploughed into meter thick ice. The drive takes approx. 1hr15. Following a short safety briefing it's time to step inside the hovercraft. It's a little noisy in there but communication is easy through the intercom. A guided tour of the archipelago as you head out to the pack ice hovering 30cm above the ice. No one quite knows where it will be or what it will look like as the wind and ice movement can change daily. After some photos and time to take in the scenery you'll head to a little log cabin located on a island for a delicious lunch hosted by Anna. If conditions for pack-ice are not ideal then the islands of Kluntarna and Brändöskär with
small idyllic fishing-villages offer a great alternative. With a little luck you may see seals and sea eagles!

Travelling by sea - quite important to mankind but made impossible by climate in the strong arctic winter. Only since the steam-engined steel vessels of the 19th century has it been possible to operate the channels of the northern seas in wintertime. Experience the might and the wide-open spaces of the ice-covered sea. Listen to the sound of ice blocks being crushed against the hull of the boat Arctic Explorer and get a glimpse of what little man can do in the hands of nature. The tour includes about 1 hour of ice-breaking and if the ice of the Bothnian Bay is not thick enough the Arctic Explorer will go upstream the River Piteå instead where there is plenty of thick ice to break. Meanwhile the passengers can stroll around the boat, both in- and outside, visit the captain on the bridge and the non-restricted areas of the engine-room. After about 30 minutes’ journeying the boat stops and the passengers are allowed out onto the ice and for those who dare is the chance of trying to swim among the ice floes dressed in a survival-suit!

Please note when taking this tour from Storklinten you will need to use your rental car to reach the start point in Luleå (1hr drive) for the arranged transfer (approx 1hr) to the ice breaker in Piteå. There is a small charge for car parking. Approx 2hrs on the ice breaker.

Northern Lights Snow shoe excursion - 2hr30
An extended sky gazing walk looking for the Northern Lights. Walking on snowshoes is not only practical in deep snow but it is also clean and quiet. Travelling with snowshoes will bring you close to the elements in a what is a basic and heartfelt outdoor experience. Your knowledgeable guide will lead you on an entertaining & educational walk as he / she shares their knowledge of forests, the snow and the wildlife.
As part of the walk, a stop is made at a wilderness camp where dinner will be prepared and served by the campfire. Min 2 people. Available Thursday evenings.

2 hours exploring Europe's last wilderness in Swedish Lapland by a very modern form of transport. Snowmobiles are now an essential part of everyday life in such remote areas. Includes fika (coffee and pastry) in the wilderness. You will be provided with warm outer clothing and snowmobile helmet. Min 2 adults. Available Tuesday, Thursday, Friday & Sundays in the morning or afternoon.

Wilderness Snowmobile tour with lunch
5 hours exploring some of Europe's most untouched winter scenery. Swedish Lapland is home to shy native animals such as moose and reindeer. Lunch will be served round an open fire in the wilderness. Ice Fishing
Together with a guide you will drill a hole in the thick and safe ice of nearby lake “Lapptjärn” and fish for the beautiful Arctic Char. While you are sitting on a nice reindeer skin on the ice, the Arctic Char are swimming below in the cold and clean water. Will they take your bait? While fishing, we will keep a fire going and serve you a hot drink and some snacks.
If you catch some fish, why not ask our guides for some advice and then prepare it yourselves during your stay? The guide will be with you for a total of two hours. You may choose to keep fishing on your own beyond that. Prices include fishing equipment, bait, a hot drink and some snacks. Min 2 adults. Available Mon, Tue & Wed 1-3pm.

Sami experiences
Meet a Sami family and their reindeer herd at a Sami camp close to Storklinten. The Sami are the native people of Swedish Lapland and their culture and way of life are important to local history. At the camp you will meet representatives from a Sami family, sit down in a tipi and listen to their stories & legends, get to know their ways, taste their food and familiarise yourself with their traditional crafts. You will get close to the reindeer that are kept at the camp. There will also be an opportunity to take a reindeer sleigh ride. A hot lunch is served as part of this tour which lasts in total about 3 hours. Min 2 people. Available Wednesday lunchtimes.

Downhill Skiing
Everything can be arranged locally. As a guide an adult lift pass is available from 220sek for 1 day, 420sek for 2 days.
As a general rule the ski slopes are open on Wednesday & Friday evenings, Saturday & Sunday all day. There are periods when the ski lifts are open at other times, including 24Dec to 8Jan, 18Feb to 11Mar & 5 to 15Apr. Please enquire regarding other dates.
