Activities
Available activities at ICEHOTEL
Sleeping in ICE HOTEL
Many people sleep much better in ICEHOTEL than they do in the warm accommodation. You will be provided with a warm sleeping bag which has been specifically designed for ICE HOTEL. We recommend that you have a minimum of long sleeved and log legged pyjamas to sleep in. Toilets, showers, saunas and changing areas are located with a warm building directly connected to ICEHOTEL.
Transfers to ICE HOTEL
Standard transfers to & from ICEHOTEL are by minibus and can be arranged for any flight landing at or taking off from Kiruna airport and for any train in and out of Kiruna Train Station. The transfer upgrades to snowmobiles and husky sleds can only be arranged from Kiruna airport.
Clothing
You will be provided with warm outer clothing that is designed to complement your own thermal under garments. The clothing you are provided with for the duration of your stay at ICEHOTEL includes, hat snowmobile suit, mittens and boots. We recommend you have warm socks, good thermal under garments, good scarf or similar and perhaps some thin thermal gloves to go under the mittens provided by ICE HOTEL.
Building of ICE HOTEL
The planning of ICE HOTEL starts many months in advance of the actual construction project. Ice is sourced from the Torne River in March and April. It is stored in a large freezer until November when temperatures are low enough for the contstruction of ICE HOTEL to begin. Building starts in November and ICE HOTEL usually opens in early December. Building work can progress through to January depending on the conditions. This should not put you off visiting ICE HOTEL over this period. This is an amazing time to visit and actually see work in progress. This is not your usual building site! Videos, documentaries and TV programs have been made about the construction of ICE HOTEL, now is the time to see it with your own eyes.
Restaurants
There are 2 excellent restaurants at ICEHOTEL and we recommend you make a table reservation prior to arrival.
ICEHOTEL Restaurant
Award winning restaurant featuring local delicacies and recipes with inspiration from around the world. Many of the choices are served on plates of ICE as your ICE HOTEL theme continues! This is also where you will find a generous buffet breakfast and lunch.
Hembygdsgården
Cosy and rustic with an open fire, standing on the banks of the Torne River just 800m from ICEHOTEL. Elk, reindeer and arctic char feature heavily on the menu and a mouth water range of deserts include cloudberries and lingonberries.
Currency
Sweden is not a member of the euro zone and uses the Swedish Kronor (SEK). You will find that international credit and debit cards are widely accepted at the local shops and the restaurants at ICEHOTEL. Just a small amount of local currency is useful.
Checking in / Out
You will be able to check in to your warm accommodation from approx. 3pm. You must check out by 11am.
As ICE HOTEL is an art gallery and open to the public during the day you will be able to check in to you cold accommodated from 6pm. ICEHOTEL opens to the public again at 10am the following morning. Should you be staying for 2 nights or longer we recommend you have an activity booked for the short period of time between checking of your room and checking in to your warm room.
Luggage
You will not be allowed to take your suitcase into your room of ICE. As the temperature is a constant -5C to -7C despite (no matter what the outside temperature is!) your personal belongings would freeze. Your luggage can be safety stored for you in the warm building connected to ICEHOTEL.
Shops
The ICE HOTEL shop on site sells a range of souvenirs, clothing and other useful items. There is a small supermarket a short walk from ICE HOTEL where you can purchase snacks and drinks. Please note that alcoholic drinks can only be purchased from a bar (2 at ICE HOTEL) or a state run licensed shop called System Bolaget.
