Sweden is an amazing country at any time of year. The contrast between the summer and winter, north and south could not be greater. The countryside is scattered with thousands of lakes
and over 50% of the country is forest. It is not hard to find complete isolation. Nature features heavily in any holiday to Sweden outside the main cities. The major cities, Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö offer real Swedish culture in a cosmopolitan environment and Stockholm is regarded as the Capital of Scandinavia.
SWEDEN
9.5 million people living in a country 1600km long and 500km wide with a total area of 450,000 sq km.
Lakes and rivers make up 9% of the surface area. Swedish is the main language. English is widely spoken and you will be made to feel extremely welcome.
LAPLAND & NORTHERN SWEDEN
Northern Sweden is recognised as being north of Stockholm. Lapland is the very north of Sweden and is home to magical natural occurrences such as the Northern Lights and the midnight sun. Lapland is Sweden's most popular winter destination and is a growing summer destination.
Expect temperatures to average -16C in January however it can get much colder! During the summer and 24hr sunlight you will need your shorts as temperatures head towards 20C. Northern Sweden is one of the least populated areas in Europe. Lapland is often referred to as 'The Last Wilderness'. In the mountains between Norway and Sweden are world class ski resorts, traditional log cabins and stunning nature.

WEST SWEDEN & GOTHENBURG
Gothenburg is the gateway to West Sweden, the Bohuslän archipelago and Sweden's first marine national park. Boat tours, unique coastal hotels, lakeside log cabins, historical sites, small islands, rocky inlets and a fast growing reputation make West Sweden one of the best holiday destinations.

EAST SWEDEN & STOCKHOLM
Stockholm is the capital of Sweden and often called 'The Venice of the North'. Stockholm city centre is made up of 14 islands. Greater Stockholm has some 24,000 islands with a vast network of boats to explore them by.
The UNESCO heritage site of The High Coast is 5hrs north of Stockholm and Gotland is a short flight or ferry journey away. Stockholm is a must see at any time of year and is a popular stop over for those visiting North Sweden and Lapland. Whether you choose to visit during the long warm summer days, or during winter months, The Old Town always offers a warm welcome as you walk along the old cobbled streets.

SOUTH SWEDEN & MALMÖ
South Sweden is arguably Sweden's most accessible destination. The main international airport is Copenhagen (Kastrup) and overnight rail services connect with continental Europe.
Rolling fields, long sandy beaches, stunning archipelagoes, hundreds of lakes and a huge array of entertainment for all. Highlights include Öland, Karlskrona, The Kingdom of Crystal (Glasriket), Skåne and Malmö. Malmö and Skåne are now well connected to Copenhagen by the Öresund Bridge creating an exciting cross border cosmopolitan region. Malmö offers a cheaper more fashionable alternative to Copenhagen where the Western Harbour, and Turning Torso are major highlights.
CURRENCY
The currency in Sweden is the Swedish Crown (SEK) although the Euro is now becoming acceptable in a growing number of shops in large cities. International credit and debit cards are widely accepted across the country. You will need photographic identification or a PIN when using cards.
TRAVEL TO & WITHIN SWEDEN
Stockholm Arlanda is the main international airport and gateway to regional airports. It is only 20mins from Stockholm City. Stockholm Bromma is an alternative airport for those flying in from Schengen countries. Budget airlines fly to Stockholm Skavsta and Vasterås. Gothenburg and Malmö also have international airports. When flying to southern Sweden you may find Copenhagen (Kastrup) more accessible. International ferries come to Sweden from Finland, Estonia, Poland, Denmark and Germany. All international train services connect in Copenhagen.
Travelling in Sweden is quick and comfortable. Trains are modern and comfortable. Regional train and bus timetables have been cleverly designed to make connections quick and easy.

FOOD & DRINK
The main cities offer a large variety of bars and restaurants to suit all tastes. As you head to the countryside choices are more restricted, however many countryside hotels (castles or manor houses) have highly reputable restaurants as Sweden has a fast growing reputation for excellent cuisine. When purchasing alcohol for private consumption you will only be able to buy it from a state run shop called Systembolaget.
LOG CABIN RENTAL
One of the most popular summer and winter holidays to Sweden. Due to the remote nature of many of these log cabins it is always the out going guests responsibility to clean the cabin for the incoming guests. When you collect the key you will often be required to provide a deposit which will be returned on departure.
Bed linen and towels are not included but can often be arranged for a small additional fee.

DRIVING IN SWEDEN
In Sweden they drive as on the right hand side of the road in left hand drive vehicles, just like continental Europe. Distances are measured in kilometers. Roads are of a high standard and well sign posted. Drink driving rules are extremely strict and information regarding congestion charging and child seats can be found at www.vv.se.
